101985 Benson & Hedges World Championship Final
Benson & Hedges World Championship of Cricket was part of the celebrations commemorating the 150th anniversary of European settlement in Victoria. All the test playing nations took part in the tournament and West Indies were betted favorites despite being defeated by India in the 1983 world cup final.
India beat New Zealand in the semis to secure their place in the finals while the Pakistanis produced a major upset by defeating the tournament favorites West Indies to enter the final. Archrivals were warming up for another thriller with the likes of Imran Khan, Javed Miandad, Kapil Dev and Ravi Shastri. Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first. Kapil Dev heroics gave India the perfect start with three top order Pakistani scalps to the credit of the great man. Reduced to 4 for 33, Miandad and Imran Khan sought to rescue the innings with a 68 run partnership for the fifth wicket, giving some life to the crawling Pakistanis. Little cameo from Wasim Raja took them to 176 at the end of the 50 overs. A soaring start with Srikkanth getting off to flyer gave India the dream start with the bat with an opening partnership of 103 between him and Ravi Shasthri. Shasthri played a more anchorish role and after Srikkanth’s dismissal he was complemented by a quick 25 by Azharuddin. Vengsarkar joined Shasthri afterwards to drive India home safe and sound.
